THE PRIONIDS OF THE NEOTROPICAL REGION II

The second volume of the illustrated catalogue of prionids is devoted to South and Central America. It follows the firstbook, which illustrated more than one hundred species worldwide of this families that has between 1200 and 1300 species.

Ivo Jeniš again presents here more than one hundred species among 325 in the region. The pictures are beautiful, emphasizing the smallest details and the colours, and many species are shown here for the firsttime.

The preparation of a second volume began in 2008. The determination of several problematic species has been consulted with experts on the Prioninae family. Thanks to the extensive collection, the lending out of samples and the co-operation of the Natural History Museum in London, the National Museum in Prague and the Silesian Museum in Opava, I was able to amass a sufficient number of species that are often unique and that haven’t been published pictorially. It is obvious from the photographic documentation that was conducted that many species, particularly the Prionacalus and Psalidognathus families, can be defined as completely new or valid species, viz the chapter Cryptical species Psalidognathini. The work on the documentation of type material from further museums and collections will continue. As a bonus, more than 60 types of Anoplodermatidae and Prioninae which are deposited in the Natural History Museum in London and one Prioninae from the National Museum in Prague and which are described from the Neotropical Region have been published in the conclusion of the book. There is also a critically compiled over-view of the largest Prioninae, the largest beetles in the world, in the conclusion of the book.

Other reader will appreciate the illustrations of the largest and the smallest species and discover that some of them wear beautiful colours. Prioninae, especially from South and Central America, are among the largest coleoptera in the world. Titanus giganteus is obviously the largest of all, only Dynastes hercules (184mm)

and Macrodontia cervicornis, another prioninae, are longer. In fact this subfamily has most of the giant beetles in the world (Table of Prioninae over 100mm in length). On the other hand, colourful and tiny species also belong to Prioninae, especially among Anacolini.

100 species a group of longhorn beetles plus more than 60 photos a holotypes from the British Museum. The book will contain almost the entire species of the genus Prionacalus, Psalidognathus and next …

THE PRIONIDS OF THE WORLD, Volume I

Illustrated Catalogue of the Beetles
by Ivo Jeniš

2008, 128 pages, 100 color photo plates illustrating 100 species

The Prionids of the WorldThe first volume in this exciting new series includes a worldwide overview of the classification of this incredible group of longhorn beetles. It reflects many recent changes in the phylogeny of the Cerambycidae due to DNA analyses.

Included are examples from 30 tribes in the subfamily Prioninae, as well as the closely related Anoplodermatidae, Parandrinae, and Oxypeltidae families. One or more representative species of each tribe is illustrated by spectacular, large photos, referencing sex, size, genus, species and locality.

The Prionids Collection

The Prionids Collection is a series of entomological books dealing with the group of beetles of the subfamily Prioninae (Prionids) from the family Cerambycidae (long-horned beetles). This selection is supplemented with representatives of species from the families Anoplodermatidae and Oxypeltidae, which are also classified in the group called Prionids.
